| WESTFALL, Elmer Ret. Admiral Elmer Thompson Tom
Westfall, U.S. Navy, 80, of Isle of Palms, died early Tuesday morning at
his residence. He was born in Camden, Arkansas to the late Okey Ellsworth
Westfall and Florence Thompson Westfall. Admiral Westfall was a graduate
of the United States Naval Academy, Mass. Institute of Technology, George
Washington University, and Harvard University. He was a past member of the
Executive Board of Coastal Carolina Council of Boy Scouts of America,
District Board of the Etiwan District of Coastal Council of Boy Scouts of
America, Advisory Board of the School of Business and Economics at the
College of Charleston, a life member of the U.S. Navy League, U.S. Naval
Institute, and U.S. Naval Submarine League. Admiral Westfall was a
previous consultant for the Electric Boat ( Division of General Dynamics)
in Groton, CT, the U.S. Navy, The Citadel Military College, and the
General Public Utilities Nuclear, for the clean up of Three Mile Island.
In 1994, Admiral Westfall received the Order of the Palmetto from Gov.
Carroll Campbell. He was also a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church.
Tom will be sadly missed by all of his family, including his wife of 57
years, Lois Muschenhein Westfall, four sons; Richard O. Westfall of
Columbia, Christopher P. Westfall of Washington, DC, Timothy L. Westfall
of Chesapeake, VA, and Peter H. Westfall of Westerville, Ohio, a daughter;
Diane B. Westfall of Isle of Palms; two sisters; Julia Westfall of Little
Rock, AK, and Virginia Bogard; and ten grandchildren. Family and friends
are invited to attend his visitation on Friday, January 30, 2004, from
5:30PM until 7:00PM, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel
, 1520 Rifle Range Rd. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on
Saturday, January 31, 2004, 10:00AM, at Stella Maris Catholic Church.
Interment will be held at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.

Pleasant, S.C. The beloved husband of Mrs. Leola Scott Wise; father of
Vernon cott, Leonard Scott, Darryl Scott and Cheasse Smalls; son of Mr.
Alfred and Mrs. Geneva Wise and the late Mrs. Josephine Coaxum Wise;

| SUTTON, Mary WALTERBORO - Mrs. Mary Lee Harrison
Sutton, 68, of 510 Avant Circle, Walterboro, died Tuesday, January 27,
2004, at the Roper Hospital in Charleston. Funeral services will be held
at four o'clock (today) Thursday, January 29, 2004, in the Brice W.
Herndon and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Walterboro, with Reverend James Day
officiating. Additional Funeral services followed by interment which will
be held in Hickman County, Kentucky. Mrs. Sutton was born June 2, 1935,
South Fulton, Tennessee, and was a daughter of Edith Lee Haygood Harrison
and the late William Harold Harrison. She was a member of the First
Christian Church in Walterboro, was active in the Christian Women's
Fellowship in several churches, and was an active volunteer at the
Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro, where she was active with the
Senior Friends. She will be most remembered for time that she worked at
the Waffle House in Walterboro where her late son, Garland E. L. Sutton
was a manager before his death in 1996. She was also a former substitute
teacher and aid for the Colleton County Public School System. She was the
widow of Mr. William Norman Sutton. Surviving her are her sons, William
Lee Sutton of Walterboro, Timothy Norman Sutton of Hampton, and Dan Sutton
of Cottageville; her daughters, Mary Norma Sutton Taylor of Huger, and
Nancy Sutton Drawdy of Hampton; her mother of South Fulton, Tennessee;
fifteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in

| SCOTT, Jane SUMMERTON - Mary Jane Duke Scott, 50,
wife of Stewart Stanley Scott, Sr., died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at
her home in North Santee. Born March 19, 1953, in Kingstree, she was a
daughter of David Hartwill and Mary Irene Freeman Duke. Her husband is
owner of Jack s Creek Marina, and she was of the Baptist faith. Surviving
besides her parents of Manning and husband of N. Santee are a daughter,
Kimberly Jane Cooper and husband, Richard, of N. Santee; a son Stewart
Stanley Scott, Jr., of N. Santee; a stepson, Richard Lee Archibald and
wife, Brenda, of Goose Creek; three brothers, Paul Hartwill Duke and wife,
Mary Ann, of Manning, David Autry Duke and wife, Betty, of Sumter, and
Michael Bruce Duke and wife, Jodi, of Manning; four grandchildren; a
number of nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. She was
preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ann Duke Davis, and a nephew, Randy
Davis. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of
Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Gene Mosier and Richard

| STRONG, Christopher KINGSTREE - Christopher Wayne
(Chris) Strong, 19, died Tuesday in a Florence hospital. Mr. Strong was
born in Kingstree, a son of Bruce Wayne Strong and Linda Eaddy Strong. He
was a member of the junior class of West Florence High School and a member
of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mr. Strong was preceded in
death by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Calcutt Strong and his
paternal grandfather, Mr. J. C. Strong, Jr. Surviving in addition to his
parents of Kingstree are 2 brothers, Gary Strong of Kingstree and John D.
Strong of Greeleyville; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Eaddy of
Kingstree and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lois Strong of Kingstree, several

| LONG, Maybelle ANDREWS - Maybelle Casselman Long, age
88, wife of the late German Long, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at
Conway Nursing Center. Mrs. Long was born in Andrews, SC, a daughter of
the late Jonas and Lottie Ethridge Casselman. She was a member of the
First Baptist Church of Andrews. Surviving are two daughters, Clara L.
Thomas and her husband Eugene of Columbia and Sara L. Fox and husband Dan
of Conway; two sons Windle Long and his wife Linda of Hemingway and Olin
Long and his wife Genevieve of Andrews; two sisters Estelle Ethridge of
Andrews and Lucy Morris of North Charleston; one brother Theron Casselman
of Loris; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Friday

| COLLIER, Aucey Aucey L. Collier, of Goose Creek, a
retired electrical welder with the Charleston Naval Shipyard, died
Saturday at a North Charleston hospital. The funeral will be at 11 a.m.
Thursday, at the Crowfield Baptist Church. Burial, directed by RUSSELL
FUNERAL CHAPEL, will be in Whispering Pines Memorial Gardens with military
honors. Mr. Collier was born January 17, 1921 at Castelia, North Carolina,
a son of E. H. Collier and Lucretia Braswell Collier. He was a US Navy
Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post #0166, the American Legion, and the Crowfield Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Derby Collier of Goose Creek; daughter,
Linda Benedict of Seabrook Island; two sons, Ronald L. Collier of LaPlata,
Maryland; Edward Steven Collier of James Island; five grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Crowfield Baptist

| HANDAL, Frank GREENVILLE - Frank Nicholas Handal, 72,
of Rolling Green Nursing Center died January 25, 2004. Born in Brooklyn,
N.Y., he was the son of the late Nicholas Soloman and Emilia Handal and
the husband of Ann Bell Handal. Mr. Handal served his country in the US
Army and was a graduate of Georgia Tech. He was the President of SC Cotton
Mills from the late 1950's to the late 1970's. He was the owner and
President of Sandlapper Publishing Co. for over 10 years. Mr. Handal was
past President of Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce, a Rotarian, Toast
Masters and involved in the United Way. He taught business classes at
Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. He was a longtime member of Columbia
Sailing Club. His hobbies included reading, sailing, bicycling and music.
Mr. Handal was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Surviving
in addition to his wife of 48 years, Ann Bell Handal, are two daughters,
Laura Hane and her husband Danny of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Ginny Beach
and her husband R.J. of Greenville; three sons, Chris Handal and his wife
Leigh of Charleston, Teever Handal and his wife Jean-Marie of Colorado
Springs, Colo., and Greg Handal and his wife Judy Lynn of Charleston; six
grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Handal was preceded in death by
his brother, Eddie, and his infant brother. Funeral services will be held
at 12 p.m., Thursday, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. In lieu of

| BRADFORD, Daniel SUMTER, S.C. - Daniel Eugene "Danny"
Bradford, 32, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, in St. Kitts, West Indies.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Dr. Linwood G. Bradford and Shellie
Simpson Bradford. Mr. Bradford was a member of Church Creek Presbyterian
Church in Charleston. He was a graduate of Thomas Sumter Academy, a 1995
graduate of The Citadel where he was commander of Kilo Company, a member
of the Summerall Guards and the Junior Sword Drill. While at the Citadel
he earned the Parachute Badge and Air Assault Badge. He was currently a
graduate student of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University
in St. Kitts, West Indies. He was President of the Emergency Veterinary
Medicine Club at Ross University. Surviving are his parents of Sumter;
three brothers, Linwood G. "Gray" Bradford, Jr., of Cary, N.C., Rev. Davy
Bradford of Savannah, Ga., and Nat Bradford of Seneca, S.C.; a sister, Joy
Bradford of Clemson, S.C.; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Theron
Bradford of Sumter; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Simpson. Funeral
services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, at Westminster Presbyterian
Church with Rev. Walt Kendall, Rev. E.C. Wittig officiating. Burial will

| BLACKWELL, Gordon GREENVILLE - Dr. Gordon Williams
Blackwell, 92, of 119 Broughton Drive, died January 26, 2004. Born in
Timmonsville, S.C., in 1911, he was the son of Benjamin Lewis Blackwell
and Amelia Williams Blackwell. He lived in Spartanburg from 1912 until
1937. He earned a BA and LLD from Furman University, an MA and LLD from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his PhD at Harvard.
He also received seven honorary degrees. Dr. Blackwell was a faculty
member of Furman University from 1937 until 1941 and the University of
North Carolina from 1941 until 1957, rising to the rank of Kenan
Professor. He served as Chancellor of the Woman's College of the
University of North Carolina from 1957 until 1960, President of Florida
State University from 1965 until 1976 and Educational Consultant since
1976. Dr. Blackwell was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award - South
Carolina Foundation of Independent Colleges in 1991 and the Algernon
Sidney Sullivan Award-Furman University in 1993. He served as trustee of
Eckerd College since its founding in 1954. Dr. Blackwell was a member and
former deacon of First Baptist Church of Greenville. He was a former
member of the Club of Thirty Nine, Green Valley Country Club, and Rotary
Clubs in three cities. He served on the boards of People's National Bank,
Greenville Hospital System, Greenville Memorial Auditorium, Greenville
Higher Education Center, Community Foundation of Greater Greenville Urban
League, School Board and Board of Visitors of Christ Church Episcopal
School, and Man of the Year Award in 1968 by the Greenville Chapter for
Society of Advancement of Management. Dr. Blackwell was an active
supporter of the arts, serving on the boards of the Greenville Symphony
Orchestra International Chamber Music Series, Furman-Greenville Fine Arts
Series, Metropolitan Arts Council and the Advisory Boards of the Peace
Center. Surviving are his wife, Jean Hollingsworth Blackwell of the home;
two daughters and sons-in-law, Blair and Pete Cooper of Florence, and
Millie and Dan Yarborough, Jr., of Greenville; 12 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth
Blair Lyles Blackwell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Furman
University Library Atrium or Blackwell-Rice Scholarship Program, c/o
Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, S.C. 29613. A
memorial service will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Daniel Chapel on
