| WATKINS, Charles Entered into eternal rest the
morning of July 27, 2004, Charles Henry Watkins, husband of Shirley
Humphries Watkins of Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The relatives and
friends of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Watkins are invited to attend the
funeral services of the former in J. HENRY STUHR INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD
CHAPEL, Thursday, July 29, 2004 at twelve o clock (Noon). Burial will
follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr s
Greenridge Road Chapel this Wednesday evening from six until eight o
clock. Mr. Watkins was born December 7, 1942 in Charleston, South
Carolina, a son of the late Andrew Charles Watkins and the late Dorothy
Stelling Watkins. Mr. Watkins was a retired maintenance mechanic with
Georgia Pacific Particle Board Plant and was a member of the Dorchester
Masonic Lodge No. 369. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Humphries Watkins
of Moncks Corner, SC; two sons, Charles Henry Watkins, Jr. of Carrollton,
GA and David Branham of Moncks Corner, SC; four daughters, Mary W. Brown
and Susan W. Hamer both of Moncks Corner, SC, Cheryl B. Elliott of Goose
Creek, SC and Melissa Branham of Hanahan, SC; a brother, Andrew Charles
Watkins, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; four sisters, Norma Jean Spangler of
Manning, SC, Dorothy Gatlin of Macedonia, SC, Libby McCloud of Paxville,
SC and Patty McKinney of Lexington, SC. Mr. Watkins is also survived by
seventeen grandchildren and numerous nieces and

| WEST, WM. Donald Entered into eternal rest the
afternoon of July 25, 2004, William Donald Don West, husband of Victoria
Wesolowski West, Residence, Charleston, South Carolina. All Funeral

Mr. West was born November 30, 1920 in Pomeroy, Ohio, the son of the late
Reese T. West and Martina Bailey West. Mr. West was a graduate of
Georgetown University in 1949. He was a World War II Army Veteran serving
in the South Pacific as a member of the 2ndBattalion,
169thInfantry, 43rdDivision, participated in action
in the Asian-Pacific Theater in New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, New
Zealand, Philippine Islands, New Guinea and Japan. Awards received
included the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Ribbon, Distinguished
Unit Badge and the Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. West was a retired systems
analyst with North American Rockwell of Columbus, Ohio and General
Accounting Office of Washington, D.C. He also was a member of the Retired
Officers Association. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Victoria
Wesolowski West of Charleston; four daughters, Beth Thomae and husband
Bill of Galena, Ohio, Cecelia Brown and husband Larry of Columbus, Ohio,
Joyce McArthur of Douglasville, Georgia, Pamela McKechnie and husband
Robert of Douglasville, Georgia. Mr. West is also survived by three
grandchildren, Christopher Miller, Benjamin McArthur and John
McArthur. | |
| WILBURN, Herman Herman Allman Wilburn, 87, of
Yemassee, SC, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Maude's Boarding Home,
Allendale, S.C., after a long illness. Born March 5, 1917, Mr. Wilburn was
the son of the late Robert Wilburn and Ethel Roberts Wilburn. He was a
retired timberman and a member of Coosawhatchie Baptist Church,
Coosawhatchie, S.C. He was former chief and founder of the Coosawhatchie
Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. Survivors include
one son, Herman A. Wilburn of Macon, Ga., one step-son, James Hadwin of
Cummings, SC; one daughter, Linda Pendleton of Beaufort, SC; three
brothers, Morris Wilburn of Conway, Haskell Wilburn of Charleston, and
Wendell Wilburn of Port Royal, SC; and one sister Lorene Mixson of
Walterboro, SC. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ethel Stanley.
Graveside services will be at Phillipsville Cemetery, Grays, SC, Thursday,
July 29, 2004, at 1 p.m. Burial in Phillipsville Cemetery, Grays, SC.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 28, 2004, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the
funeral home in Ridgeland, SC. | |
| RHOAD, JR., Charles Charles C. (Cliff) Rhoad, Jr.,
51, of Charleston, died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Charleston after an
extended illness. Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, at
Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Terry R. Peele and Rev. Dan
Ratchford officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
DUKES-HARLEY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Rhoad was born
in Orangeburg, S.C., a son of Charles C. Rhoad and Lynette Parler Rhoad.
Mr. Rhoad was a graduate of Newberry College and was owner of Rhoad's
Cleaners for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in
Orangeburg. Survivors include one son, Jason Lawrence Rhoad of Augusta,
Ga., his parents of Orangeburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John
Daniel (Julie) Rhoad of Chapin, Dennis James (Sally) Rhoad of Charleston;
one sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Bill (Terri) Hargrove of Waynesboro,
Ga.; five nieces and two nephews, Jami Hargrove, and Kinsey, Tori,
Charlotte, Myers, Brett, and Jacob Rhoad; special friends, The Scott
Mozingo Family, of Charleston. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9
p.m., Wednesday evening, at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home in Orangeburg.

| RUTLEDGE, Marianne Mrs. Marianne Jenkins Rutledge,
71, of 33 W. Tallulah Drive, passed away on July 25, 2004, at St. Francis
Hospital. Born in Charleston, Mrs. Rutledge was the daughter of the late
David Jamison and Esther Allston Wayne Jenkins and the wife of William
White Rutledge, Sr. Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter,
Dorothy Sandifer Rutledge of Greenville; two sons, William White Rutledge,
Jr., of Greenville and David Jamison Rutledge of Spartanburg; two
grandsons, John Jamison Rutledge and Christopher Franklin Rutledge, both
of Spartanburg; and a cousin, Kathleen Jenkins Parish. Mrs. Rutledge was
predeceased by a daughter, Esther Rutledge. Mrs. Rutledge was the last
valedictorian of Memminger High School, Charleston, S.C., and attended the
University of South Carolina. She volunteered for many years at St.
Francis Hospital and Meals on Wheels. She was a life long Episcopalian.
Visitation will be at THOMAS MCAFEE FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, on
Wednesday, July 28, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be
held Thursday, July 29, 1:30 p.m., at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Memorials

| STANLEY, John HAMPTON - Mr. John Harold Stanley, 76,
of 540 Ice House Road, near Hampton, died Monday afternoon in Memorial
Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., after an extended illness. Mr. Stanley
was born in Hampton, November 14, 1927, a son of the late Neve and Ruby
Horton Stanley. He was a retired construction worker. Surviving are: five
sons, Don and C.W. Stanley of Hampton, James Stanley of Varnville, John
Stanley of Cummings, and Carl Stanley of Sylvania, Ga.; three daughters,
Lydia Cook and Farmington, New Mexico, Libby Priester of Hampton, and
Windy Stanley of Pelion; two sisters, Evelyn Stanley and Frances Rhoden of
Varnville. There are 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Wednesday, in the Chapel of
PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME IN HAMPTON, conducted by Rev. Kevin Byrd and
Rev. Claude Hydrick, with burial in the Sandy Run Cemetery. Friends may

Sims Turner. She was formerly of North Charleston. Mrs. Turner is the

| PARKER, Frances Mrs. Frances Elliott Parker, 84, of
1022 Willard Street Extension in Hampton, died Tuesday morning at her
residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Parker was born in Chester,
October 19, 1919, a daughter of the late John A. and Minnie C. Elliott.
She was a retired Music Teacher, having taught Music in the Public Schools
of Hampton County her entire career and also taught private lessons in her
home. She had been the pianist at the Hampton 1st Baptist Church and the
Hampton Presbyterian Church for many years, and was a member of the
Hampton Music Club and the Azalea Garden Club. She was a member of the
Hampton Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of the late Horace C.
Parker and C. Bissell Parker. Surviving are three sons, Charlie and Mike
Parker of Greenville and Johnny Parker of Hampton; one daughter, Sali P.
Pope of Hampton; two brothers, John C. and Floyd Elliott of Chester; and
one sister, Betty Harrison of Spartanburg. There are five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hampton 1st Baptist
Church with burial in the Crocketville Cemetery, directed by
PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton, located at 300 Mulberry Street,

HOLMES, Scott Sgt. Scott Kirkpatrick Holmes, 40, of the Charleston Police Department died Saturday, July 24, 2004 as a result of a traffic accident. Born June 7, 1964 in Charleston, SC he was the son the late George T. Holmes and Anne Whitlock Holmes now of Spartanburg, SC. Sgt. Holmes was a member of the Charleston Police Department for the past 17 years and also of the Army National Guard for 23 years. Having been raised in Pickens, SC he attended school there and later received his college degree in History from Citadel and his masters in Public Administration from Webster University. Activated for one year following 9/11 he received the meritorious service award from the Army. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Citadel Alumni Association and the Sumter Guard. Sgt. Holmes was a Methodist. Besides his mother Sgt. Holmes is survived by his wife Suzette Latsko Holmes of Charleston, SC; one sister, Carrie Teska and husband Allan of Atlanta, GA; his in-laws Ellen and John Latsko and two sisters-in-law, Audrey and Kadie Latsko and one nephew Jaedyn Rivera all of Allentown, PA. Charleston, SC, the son of Edward M. Kramer and Judy Whitfield Kramer. He
was a graduate of Wando High School and attended Trident Technical
College. He was a chef with the Mustard Seed Restaurant on James Island.
Mr. Kramer was a member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue. He is

MICHIE, James CONWAY - James L. Michie, age 63, died, Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Conway Nursing Center. Mr. Michie was born in Florence, SC, a son of the late Donald Ervin Michie, M.D. and Elsa Schroder Michie. He retired from Coastal Carolina University where he was Associate Professor in the Department of History. Mr. Michie was formerly an archaeologist with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina from 1976-1989. He had a long and distinguished career as a South Carolina archaeologist. Mr. Michie received his B.A. from the University of South Carolina in 1977 and his M.A. from the University of Tennessee in 1987. Prior to his formal education, he began as an avocational archaeologist conducting original research on the prehistory on the state. Many of the basic formulations of South Carolina prehistoric archaeology were developed by him with publications beginning in the 1960's. Later in his career, he pursued historical archaeology specializing in plantations. The latter culminated in his book Richmond Hill Plantation, IT,1810-1868 published in 1990 by the Reprint Company. He was co-founder, along with Dr. Robert L. Stephenson, of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina, the founder of its newsletter and journal and co-founder of its annual state conference. In 1998, he received the R.L. Stephenson Lifetime Achievement Award from the ASSC. and was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Surviving are one brother, Donald E. Michie, Jr. of Columbia and several cousins. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Monday from GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, CONWAY CHAPEL with Dr. Al Goodyear and Dr. Stanley South officiating. | BISHOP, Sarah Sarah Elizabeth Johnston Bishop, 89, of
Goose Creek, SC, a former wrapper and packer for the cigar factory, died
Tuesday in a local nursing home. The funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday
afternoon, July 29, 2004 in the CHAPEL OF DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS
CORNER. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens, North
Charleston. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
this Wednesday evening. Mrs. Bishop was born November 26, 1914 in Hilda,
SC, a daughter of Thomas Johnston and Sarah Buck Johnston. She was the
widow of Robert P. Bishop, Sr., and was preceded in death by a son, Robert
P. Bishop, Jr. Mrs. Bishop was of the Mormon faith. Surviving are a
daughter, Janet B. Bruner, and her husband Fred of Artemus, KY; a son,
Glenn T. Bishop, Sr. and his wife, Joyce of Moncks Corner and eight
grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great

| BUSKIRK, Claudia Claudia Ann Buskirk, age 54, has
once again joined the cosmos, meeting with beloved friends and family. She
will miss her friends and family, but will look forward to seeing them in
times to come. She was the daughter of the late George Thomas Buskirk. She
is survived by her mother, Jane Buskirk, her brothers Pete, Mike, Rusty,
her sister Laura and stepmother Mary Buskirk Collins. Donations may be

| FOY, David David L. Foy, Sr., 62, of Jamestown, a
retired heavy equipment operator with Martin Marietta, died Monday at a
North Charleston hospital. The funeral will be at 4 p.m., Friday, at
Jamestown Baptist Church. Burial, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, will
be in St. James United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Foy was born June
22, 1942 in Maysville, North Carolina, a son of Robert Foy and Minnie
Jones Foy. He was a member of Jamestown Baptist Church. Surviving are his
wife, Judy Carawan Foy of Jamestown; two sons, David L. (Lisa) Foy, Jr. of
Andrews, Damon B. (Denise) Foy of Moncks Corner; daughter, Debra L. Foy of
North Charleston; two brothers, James Foy of Jackson, Tennessee, Kenneth
Foy of Washington, NC; sister, Carolyn Foy Yates of Maysville, NC; five
