HEADLINE: McCormick Tribune Foundation Awards $400,000 to Citadel;
Additional Annual $40,000 Designated for Reestablishment of McCormick Scholarships

DATELINE: CHARLESTON, S.C. Jan. 10

BODY:

CHARLESTON, S.C., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Citadel has been awarded $400,000 from the McCormick Tribune Foundation (MTF), one of the nation's largest charitable foundations. The school will also receive $40,000 annually from the foundation for two scholarships.

The grants are part of the foundation's 50th anniversary celebration and will be used for the renovation of the historic McCormick Beach House, which is used for the recreation of cadets, and to reestablish McCormick Scholarships for Illinois students to attend The Citadel.

The grants continue the foundation's long tradition of supporting The Citadel. The partnership between these organizations is rooted in the friendship between Col. Robert R. McCormick, founder of MTF, and Gen. Charles P. Summerall, Citadel president from 1931-1953 and McCormick's commanding officer during World War I.

$400,000 will be spent on extensive renovations to the McCormick Beach House, a prominent landmark established on the Isle of Palms in 1958 in honor of McCormick. The grant includes appropriations for both internal and external repairs, and will enhance the McCormick Beach House as a recreational facility benefiting not only cadets of The Citadel, but also faculty, staff and the Lowcountry community.

The foundation will also reestablish McCormick Scholarships at The Citadel, originally instituted by McCormick himself in 1934 and further specified in his will: "To provide annually ... toward tuition and expenses at The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina, for each of two deserving and needy ... residents of Illinois."

"We are honored to continue the legacy of McCormick's support of The Citadel," said Richard A. Behrenhausen, president of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. "This grant is particularly significant because it involves an institution McCormick supported during his lifetime and specifically mentioned in his will."

The selection of scholars will be made by The Citadel and will involve assessment of character, need and promise in addition to academics. McCormick Scholarships will be awarded to two recipients from each class beginning in the 2005 academic year. The scholarships will include $5,000 per year for a maximum of four years, assuming the cadets remain in good standing. Each subsequent year, two additional incoming cadets will receive scholarships.

About the McCormick Tribune Foundation

The McCormick Tribune Foundation is one of the nation's largest charitable organizations, with current combined assets of close to $2 billion. In 2004 the foundation gave more than $90 million in the form of grants designed to invest in communities, address human needs and promote the ideals of a democratic society through innovative partnerships. The foundation, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2005, was first established as a charitable trust upon the death of Col. Robert R. McCormick, longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.

The foundation provides assistance in four program areas -- communities, education, journalism and citizenship -- and funds a special initiatives program. Through its grants, the foundation seeks to improve the social and economic environment; encourage a free and responsible discussion of issues affecting the nation; enhance the effectiveness of American education; and stimulate responsible citizenship.
